BoJos Caught Manipulating

I ran a scan on "Bob Jones University" and came up with some interesting edits
from their computers. Needless to say, they constantly tinker with
the Wikipedia article on "Bob Jones University".
Below are some of the more amusing, egregious,

Graduates
have been accepted into [[medical school]]s
at a rate that exceeds the national average.
Graduates in other fields have been accepted
into many [[law
school]]s, and other
graduate programs at other colleges and
universities.
However,
according to some college
rating sites, some graduates have said that much difficulty
was required to attend some law schools. In many cases an
explanation of attending BJU
was required as it was viewed negatively.
Some graduates even claimed that
BJU misleads people by claiming that its
graduates attend prestigious law
schools when in reality very few were accepted to each of
the schools they mention.

Largely due to the national attention
received after the scuffle with the IRS and
such events, the school has become known in
American popular culture as some sort of a
stereotypical racist, bigoted southern
institution (especially outside of the
southern United States). To those who know
little of the school as a university, of its
academics and so on, this is probably what
the school is most known for.
However, far from this stereotype, the
school has a diverse community of foreign
students and has recently in its
intercollegiate debate competitions placed
alongside such outstanding instutions
[sic]
as
Harvard University. [Bob

red herring to distract people from their racist past and
continued flirtations with racism. See

Some information is available on the internet, and maybe the

claim that students enrolling for the first time are in full
knowledge of all the rules. |

Since
many academic biologists consider the theory of [[evolution]]'s
explanation of biological diversity the foundation of their
science, this embrace of creationism may be one of the major
reasons that BJU has chosen to forego accreditation until
recently. BJU is currently seeking accreditation as a
Christian college;
however, even should the university as
a whole attain accredited status, it remains likely that a
bachelor's degree in biology from BJU would not be
recognized by any accredited [[Ph.D.]] program in the
biological sciences as legitimately fulfilling the
prerequisites for graduate study.

As Bob Jones University
would later claim before numerous federal courts, including
the U.S. Supreme Court (see below), these policies on
interracial dating were based on sincerely held religious
beliefs. On the other hand, Bob Jones
University today claims that the policy was a product of a
(1950s) legal threat on the part of the parents of a male
Asian student who threatened legal action after learning
that their son "nearly married" a white girl [http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2000/110/53.0.html].

When Jones founded his
university in 1927, explicit [[anti-Catholicism]] was
common. After the 1960 election of [[John F. Kennedy]], many
[[Evangelicals]] moved toward a greater tolerance. Jones,
however, held that a Biblically informed understanding of
the [[Roman Catholic Church]] was that Catholicism was an
anti-Christian cult and the [[Pope]] an Antichrist.[Bob

And here's an edit made to the Wikipedia article on
"Bob Jones, Sr." |
In the late 1920s,
it was
rumored that Jones,
like [[Billy Sunday]] (who
was an Iowan) accepted
contributions for his evangelistic campaigns from the [[Ku
Klux Klan]].
According to the rumors,
Jones also supported members of the Klan, notably his
friend, Alabama Governor [[Bibb Graves]], for political
office. Although Jones rejected lawlessness and lynching, he
sympathized with the Klan's professed endorsement of
religious orthodoxy, [[Prohibition]], and opposition to the
teaching of evolution as fact. [[Racial segregation]] per se
was hardly an issue in 1920s Alabama because at the time
both supporters and opponents of the Klan were
segregationists.
<ref>Johnson, 138; Turner, 12</ref>
These
rumors were later proven to be false and were presented by
opposers of what Bob Jones Sr. stood for in an attempt to
damage his reputation.[Bob

Factual but unpleasant information has been deviously recast
by this BoJo editor as mere gossip. Note
that a previous editor cited reference sources for this
information, which the BoJo editor deleted. Bob Sr.'s KKK
ties are well-established. Prof. Glenn Feldman of the
University Alabama amply documented these facts in his
doctoral thesis. That thesis has been published in book form
as "Politics, Society and the Klan in Alabama: 1915-1949,"
which I have read. Even Bob Sr.'s official biography,
"Builder of Bridges," written by his personal friend R. K.
Johnson, acknowledges on page 138 (of the first edition) that Bob Sr. had KKK sympathies.
Notice also how a previous editor has
"spun" Bob Sr. as a peace-loving Christian whose friends
just happened to include some aw-shucks klansmen. The KKK,
we are told, was not concerned with racial segregation --
that was "hardly an issue in the 1920's." (We all know that
racism has never been an issue in Alabama -- then or now.)
No, the KKK was just a fraternal organization with
pro-prohibition and anti-evolution views. Sort of a redneck
Rotary Club. No lynchings. No racism. Just buttermilk,
Bibles, and brotherly love. |
The above examples
are by no means the only ones I found. I think their purpose is pretty
clear: (1) manipulate and control the "Bob Jones University" Wikipedia article; (2) maintain damage control; and (3)
convert the article into BoJo propaganda.
